La Cantina is an affordable restaurant in the backpacker area of Ho Chi Minh City. The gold rush inspired interor design makes it stand out on a street full of restaurants. Western breakfasts and Mexican food such as tacos, enchiladas and albondigas can all be found here.

La Cantina that really can

I was immediately struck by the décor as I ventured in, the Mexican theme is done very tastefully & the lighting is just right. The brick walls covered with nostalgia & the unimposing music make La Cantina a warm and cosy place. The pleasant smiles from the staff & being led to a seat makes one feel very welcome.

After perusing the substantial menu, I chose the steak with creamy mushroom sauce (109,000đ) and a salmon salad (79,000đ). Even though there was a large group, my food was served in a very timely manner. I was impressed with the flawless presentation, clearly effort had been put into serving visually pleasing dishes. The steak tasted great, but was slightly undercooked for my liking. I was not asked how I would like it done so I would suggest future diners request how they want it.

However, it did taste meaty & the fries were perfectly crispy, exactly how fries should be. The salad, also presented nicely, was abundant in lettuce but the salmon was sparse. The lettuce, olive, tomato salad had been topped with a mere four slices of salmon. I have since had a pizza from here & I must say, as my memory recalls, it was the best I have had in Vietnam.

I highly recommend a visit to La Cantina. The friendly staff, great selection of dishes & comfortable setting make it a truly pleasant dining option. Four stars & I will return, probably within hours!
