Quiet French garden with great food

Reviewed on 2013-11-03 (Updated on 2017-04-21)

Le Jardin is a famous French bistro especially popular among French expats in town. Located within the garden courtyard of Idecaf (Institute of Culture Exchange with France), Le Jardin reminds me of a traditional French Café with its natural light and basic furniture. The indoor area has a bar where people drop by for a drink and a chat. Do not expect any fancy dishes here, they serve typical French cuisine in a charming home cooked style.

Le Jardin has an affordable price range and great service with attentive staffs, some even speak French. Their food has never disappointed me; I love to try different dishes whenever I visit. Today, I went for the Bavette (Flank Steak) with pepper sauce and French fries. The steak deserves high praises as usual. It was tender and flavourful with a perfect amount of subtle spices.

If you have a sweet tooth like me, dessert is a must to complete a meal, and the Crème brulée was my choice of the day. Simply perfect. One important note for this restaurant is that you should book in advance, it is almost always full.

Straight forward delicious French food

Le Jardin is exactly what it sounds like, a small French restaurant with a cute garden. They serve simple French food and I go here every two weeks as their special every second Friday is moules-frites (mussels and French fries). It is originally a Belgian dish, but I really like how they make it here.

Portions are of average size, maybe a bit small compared to others Western restaurants in town, but it will get you full. I ordered beef carpaccio followed by moules-frites, and my friend ordered chicken breast with pepper sauce. It cost us around 220,000₫ per person including drinks. Their beef carpaccio is quite simple, but good. The moules-frites is great thanks to the fresh mussels and the delicious and creamy sauce. My friend enjoyed the chicken, especially because of the well-tasting pepper sauce.

If you wish to find something fancy, this is not where to go, but if you wish to find a relaxing, affordable and tasty French restaurant, Le Jardin is my first recommendation. One thing I would like to remind you of though, you will need to book a table here, it is a favorite spot among French expats in town so it gets packed almost every day.

A garden downtown

If you want to have a relaxed lunch meeting or a chilled out dinner with friends in town without going overboard with your expenses, try Le Jardin for some affordable French cuisine. I can assure your full satisfaction!

The secret garden some would say, but not so secret anymore, so do book beforehand if you are more than two and want to enjoy your meal outside which is much more pleasant than the indoor area.

As you enter, you immediately feel that you are in a little town in the south of France, far away from the busy Saigon streets, and without realizing, you can even imagine the crickets singing. Out of no where, you are on holidays during a meal, and the feeling is quite priceless.

The “A la carte” menu hasn’t changed in years I’ve been told, yet the products are always fresh and from the morning’s market.

I always go for their salads when I’m there, as they are very generous in quantity, deliciously fresh and at a very reasonable price. Feast on a steak tartare with salad or French fries, some beef rump-steak with its delicious sauce, some chicken filet and the home-made mashed potatoes. The quality of the meat and the balanced seasoning’s expectations are always met, and the service is attentive to the client’s needs.

At night, enjoy a glass of wine, at a price you will hardly ever find anywhere else in Saigon!
If you fancy some dessert, I highly recommend their apple crumble or their chocolate profiteroles, an absolute divine way to end a meal.

It is for me one of the best canteens in town to have a western style meal, and by far the most attractive value for money I have come across in Saigon.
