Nagomi is an affordable Japanese restaurant located in the city center of Ho Chi Minh City. Popular both for the reasonably priced lunch menus and creative sushi and sashimi dishes. The Japanese owner has decorated it with so that Japanese expats will feel at home.

Small, but nicely decorated, the Nagomi is a typical Japanese restaurant. Very nice and clean, with a modern approach to interior design. As soon as I entered, everybody warmly welcomed me according to Japanese custom. Downstairs they have a nice sushi bar and upstairs a cosy room with four tables. I went upstairs, because I don't want to bother people with my camera.

Usually, Japanese restaurants are more on the expensive side, but the Nagomi is in an area with many expats from Japan, so they offer set lunch meals for office workers at competitive prices. Of course, if you pick à la carte dishes, they are rather on the pricey side. I chose the teriyaki chicken & sashimi set lunch for 90.000đ, which is really a bargain and exceptionally delicious. It includes the teriyaki chicken, miso soup, a filling side dish with noodles, meat and potatoes, pickles, rice and the sashimi. The melon juice was excellent and I also tried umeshu, a plum wine on ice.

I enjoy Japanese set meals, because there are various small dishes on the tray to satisfy different kinds of cravings. All in all, the Nagomi was everything I expected with an excellent value for money balance and therefore earns five stars.

There is just one little thing, the wasabi was too friendly and did not make my cry. Even when I put the entire lump of wasabi in the mix, it was still too weak to be called anything other than green play doh. I hope next time the wasabi will be stronger - and there will definitely be a next time for me at the Nagomi.
