Ham sub at Subway

Reviewed on 2014-03-10 (Updated on 2014-11-15)

This evening’s choice for a snack was Subway on Pham Ngu Lao, located below the Lele hotel. It is a typical Subway place, quite small with seating for about 12 people. I often go here as the buy 10 get 1 free through their loyalty card scheme makes it truly enticing. I always opt for takeaway & tonight was no different.

Subway offers a choice of bread, freshly baked on the premises. I have no favourite bread and tonight I chose the 6 inch ham sub on wheat bread. The price is great, just 39,000đ. After choosing you bread, you are free to select your sub fillings and condiments. My ham sub was graced with lettuce, olives, cheese, onions, tomato, mayo & mustard. A customer is also giving the option of having it toasted. I tend to decline this as toasted cheese loses flavour when taken away.

The staff are always welcoming & understand the necessary English to construct a sandwich that is typical of Subway throughout other nations. I would also suggest visitors here request that sauces are put on first, perhaps it is just me but I believe that’s how a sandwich should be made.

Due to the fresh ingredients, prompt service, good price & friendly staff, Subway receives 5 stars. I feel it achieved exactly what is expected to a high standard.

Perfect for lunch not dinner

I have had two conflicting experiences with the Subway, Lê Thánh Tôn branch. The first time, I got a take-out of Sliced Chicken Sub with my favorite Parmesan bread, but when I got home I was so disappointed. The bread and the veggies were not fresh and the chicken was also mediocre. Further, the lady in the counter wasn’t friendly at all. This happened at almost closing time in the night, so I decided to give Subway another chance. The second time, I went during the lunch hour and chose to eat-in. And it turned out to be a good decision in the end.

I ordered a Tuna Sub with my Parmesan bread again, toasted with cheese. The service itself was a pleasant surprise from my previous time. The girls were very friendly and spoke English quite well. I further took the meal upgrade by paying 30,000đ extra for a cookie and drink. They have a small indoor and outdoor seating arrangement, and I chose to seat in the porch outside as the weather was surprisingly pleasant. The Sub was wonderful; it finally tasted like a real Sub! The tuna, veggies, bread - Everything was fresh and tasty. The Double Chocolate Chip cookie was heavenly! I was extremely satisfied with my meal for just 79,000đ.

Moreover, I was politely asked to taste a new Sub that they were trying out, for free. They took my feedback with a smile, and overall it was definitely a delightful experience. So I strongly recommend you to get there during lunch hours instead of later in the night to get better quality Subs and friendlier experience.

Speedy service, subpar sandwiches

The Subway outlet in Kumho Asiana Plaza was quiet on the Friday morning I had breakfast there with a companion. There was a good number of restaurants and cafes within the complex, but not many places were open for breakfast. Both my friend and I wanted something filling, so we opted for Subway over Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf.

I ordered the breakfast combo of an Egg & Cheese sub and a drink for only 39,000đ. The available drink options for the combo were: coffee, tea, bottled water and bottled orange juice. I had a bottle of Aquafina water. You could also add extra ham or bacon on your breakfast sub for an additional 10,000đ. I am not really sure how they did the egg, but I believe it came from a pre-packaged individual box of egg mixture that was just popped into the microwave oven for a minute or two. I really love eggs, cooked in every way, but the microwaved egg was just not good at all. Lacking in flavor and fragrance, my sandwich tasted almost vegetarian. So, as cheap the breakfast combo may be, it was not great.

My friend had a Roast Beef sub (75,000đ) on honey oat bread, with cheese, lettuce, tomato, cucumber and mayo, honey mustard and sweet chili sauce. I had tasted their Roast Beef before and I liked it because I thought it was a healthier choice compared to the other heavily processed meats like ham and bacon. But my friend found it underwhelming and she packed half of it to bring home.

The sandwiches were filling for sure, but taste wise it was hit and miss. Service was very fast and efficient though, so Subway is recommended if you are hungry and in a rush.
