Xá Lợi Pagoda, the headquarters of Vietnam Buddhism until 1981, was built in 1956 for worshiping the relics of Buddha and opened to the public in 1958. It suffered from a series of raids in 1963 due to Buddhists fighting against the religious persecution of president Ngô Đình Diệm.
